District Project
Our District project is the support of Endometriosis New Zealand as they provide information about endometriosis to girls at secondary school le
vel - the "All about ME" program. On April 11th Zonta Area 1 held a very successful High Tea to raise funds for the ME program.
Local Projects
Locally, we support various service groups and initiatives and provide awards for girls who are active in the community while engaged in study at secondary and tertiary levels. Zonta runs a number of awards at local, District, and International level. In July we welcomed Dr Karen Willcox as our speaker. Dr Willcox spoke on her work at MIT Boston as well as projects with NASA and Boeing. Dr Willcox is a past recipient of the Zonta Amelia Earhart Award. A Massey North Shore student has recently won the International Jane Klauseman Award - our congratulations to Valeria Kern. This year we are submitting a very able candidate to the Young Women in Public Affairs Award. More on this to follow……
We support a Z Club at Carmel College - essentially Zonta at secondary level.
And we enjoy fun and fellowship together with great speakers, interesting committees, and worthwhile projects that make a difference in our local and wider world. Photo: Dr Willcox and Zonta Lieutenant Governor Maureen Heine.
We were delighted to learn that we are the inaugural winners of the Cherry Raymond award for our Advocacy project. White Ribbon Appeal which is held on 25 November each year…
White Ribbon day was held on the 25th November. Our club held stalls in both Westfield Glenfield and Takapuna where club members handed out white ribbons and collected $800 to be shared amongst North Shore Women’s Refuge and our own project Just a little Bit makes a difference – where Zonta supports women who arrive at the the Emergency Department of North Shore Hospital as victims of violence. Often these women arrive with their children and only the clothes they stand up in. Zonta assists them with money to support their immediate needs such as Taxis to the refuge, nappies for babies etc.
The movie Julia and Julie was a very successful fund raiser where the club took over the Sunday afternoon showing of the movie and sold tickets to friends and family. Due to the support of Bridgeway Cinema we were able to donate $1000.00 to Plunket North Shore for replacement of carseats available to mothers for hire and support of The Family Centre where many young mums receive support and advice on various mothering concerns.
To be a Zontian is to stand arm in arm, hand in hand, heart in heart with all the women of the world.
All enquires re our vibrant, active and enjoyable club should be sent to aucklandnorthshore@zonta.org
